How long do drugs show up in urine tests?

On Behalf of | Feb 7, 2020 | Drug Charges |

Urine tests are one of the most common ways to test for drugs. These tests are often used by employers and may also be used by the authorities.

What you may be wondering, then, is how long the drugs are actually going to show up. The following is a rough guideline, though it should be noted that each case is different and there are many factors to consider. That said, the general time frames are as follows:

  • MDMA – two to four days
  • Heroin – one to three days
  • Meth – two to three days
  • Cocaine – two to three days
  • Marijuana and related products with THC – seven days or up to a month or longer

Of course, this means that the drugs will still show up long after the effects have worn off. If you smoke marijuana and then fail a drug test five days later, your high is long gone. Do not assume that just because you can’t feel the effects does not mean you can’t test positive.

Additionally, it’s important to remember that there are other tests beyond urine tests. These may include things like blood tests and hair tests. Many drugs will show up for far longer in these tests than they will in urine tests.

Regardless, if you find yourself facing drug charges, it’s wise to know as much as you can about the testing process and the steps that need to be taken. You also want to know all of the legal defense options you have if you are facing any type of drug charges.
