A fatal overdose causes more than just a death. It leads to families suffering. People who sell drugs that lead to an overdose can also face charges for murder.
According to an Oct. 15 report, a judge in Franklin County ordered a woman to 20 years in prison after hearing about her role in a deadly overdose. The woman, 52, sold methamphetamine to a 24-year-old woman in August 2014. The young woman was a courier, not the intended purchaser. She’d collected the drugs for her then-boyfriend, but she was pulled over by a state trooper on the trip back to him in Rushville.
The woman, believing she would be caught, decided to swallow the baggie of methamphetamine. There were 7 grams inside. The officer allowed her to leave, but she soon pulled over and died near New Point. After swallowing the baggie, it opened and caused an overdose.
While this took place in Indiana, the important thing to note is that the person selling the drugs was from Georgia. She was part of a large network that conspired to transport drugs between Georgia and Franklin County, Indiana. The woman was convicted of two level 3 felonies as a result of the woman’s death. Had the crime occurred more recently, she could have faced a level 1 felony due to the woman’s fatal overdose.
The thing to keep in mind here is that selling or giving drugs to others can be a problem that comes back to haunt you, even across state borders. It’s in your best interests to work with an attorney who is versed in drug laws to help you get a trial in the safest state for you.
