With the summer season quickly approaching, you might come across a sobriety checkpoint in the Hinesville area. You need to know what to do when told to drive into a checkpoint. A good start is to follow this order and not try to turn around and avoid the checkpoint, especially if you have nothing to hide. Here are some tips for dealing with a DUI checkpoint so it can go as smoothly as possible.

First and foremost, make sure you follow the instructions given by the officer. Do not have an attitude and do not become defensive. This will only get you into a bad situation. Provide the officer with all of the documents he or she requests. This likely will include your vehicle registration, driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.

If the officer asks you to exit the vehicle, you should do so slowly and with your hands visible at all times. Do not try to exit the vehicle with anything in your hands. If you have the documents in your hands, give them to the officer first and then exit the vehicle. This will ease the stress of the officer.

Should you be administered field sobriety tests, you should comply and perform them to the best of your ability. If you fail any of these tests, it is possible that the officer will place you under arrest for suspicion of DUI.

Sobriety checkpoints are tactics used by law enforcement to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the roads of Georgia. If you are ever arrested at a checkpoint, be sure sure you know your rights so you can mount a defense.
