Opioid crisis results in warnings for illegal pharmacies online

Drug abuse is a significant problem across the United States, Hinesville included. One of the biggest issues in the U.S. is the opioid crisis. It started when medical providers issued too many prescriptions for opiates, and it continues now with thousands of people addicted to these painkillers and prescription medications.

Many groups of people are at risk when they do not use these medications as prescribed. To avoid having people get them when they’re not supposed to, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has started to take action against websites that market unapproved opioids.

According to an Aug. 28 news release from the FDA, the organization warned another 21 websites to stop selling opioid products in the U.S. The sales are illegal, and they help fuel the opioid crisis, which is at a critical state as it is.

The FDA has sent warning letters to dozens of websites, focusing on slowing down illegal sales through these web pages. It also works closely with public health officials and others to reduce sales on social media and other internet-based locations.

The most significant trouble with online retailers is the risk that these drugs aren’t as described. They could be contaminated, expired or unsafe in other ways.
