What can I do when my depression was misdiagnosed?

When you go to the emergency room or your doctor with a medical complaint, you should expect that your symptoms are taken seriously and given enough attention. You know what is right and what is normal for your body, so it is important that you are listened to.

When you persistently go to the doctor with symptoms that he or she fails to diagnose because he or she has not explored all viable options, your medical provider could potentially be liable. This is because they have the legal responsibility to ensure that your health is the highest priority and that they act with competence at all times.

There are some particular types of illnesses that are more commonly misdiagnosed. These can be both mental illnesses or physical illnesses, and both are equally important.

The misdiagnosis of depression

When you have depression, the symptoms can manifest themselves in many different ways. It may be the case that you have a low appetite or low energy, leading your doctor to believe that you have some type of physical illness that must be addressed. When you continue to suffer from the symptoms of depression after differing methods of treatment for other conditions, you are likely to feel frustrated, and your depression may continue to worsen, potentially leading you to be unable to work.

Depression is commonly misdiagnosed, along with many other mental illnesses. However, it is important that all medical providers recognize the symptoms of depression so that it can be properly treated. If you believe that your depression was misdiagnosed in Georgia, you may be able to take action in regard to the prolonged pain that you suffered.
