Would you risk DUI if you knew how alcohol affects you?

In the state of Georgia, you can face charges of driving under the influence if your blood alcohol concentration is at 0.08 percent or higher. If you drive a commercial vehicle, the legal limit is only 0.04 percent.

How much is too much? You may not know how little it takes to reach a BAC level that could put you in trouble with the law.

Gender versus weight

How drinking alcohol affects you will depend on your weight, your gender and how fast you are consuming the adult beverage. Women become intoxicated faster than men: A man who weighs the same as a woman will be able to drink more before he feels the effects.

Staying in bounds

One standard drink produces a BAC of 0.02 percent. After having one beer, glass of wine or mixed drink, a man who weighs 150 pounds will have a BAC of 0.03, but if he consumes his drink over the period of an hour, his BAC will become 0.01. It will return to 0.00 after two hours. A man who weighs 200 pounds will have a BAC of 0.02, but it will still take two hours to go down to 0.00.

The effects of two drinks

After having two standard drinks, a man who weighs 100 pounds will have a BAC of 0.08 percent. If he consumes the drinks over a period of two hours, his BAC will only go down to 0.04 percent. It will take five hours for him to achieve a BAC of 0.00 percent. However, a larger man, one who weighs 200 pounds, will have a BAC of 0.04 and it will only take two hours to attain a BAC of 0.00.

Three drinks and beyond

In general, a man will begin to see negative effects in perception and judgment if he has three drinks, and problematic issues will increase in terms of driving ability with the more alcohol he consumes. A criminal defense attorney will tell you that drinking and driving not only endangers yourself and others, but a DUI on your record can adversely affect your future. If you cannot drink in moderation, it will be far better not to drink at all.
